As I make things by the wool that I feel I really like this material. It has a delicate details and I would like to find a way to represent it. Then I thought about photogram.
Seeing the results, I think it does very well. The image catches all the details. I practically like the image above. It has an interesting visual effect. 2D image which has 3D movement on it. It also looks like time lines, messy lines represent the messy time in people's life. Could I make this image bigger or project it on somewhere or make it moving?
To help me take my ideas further that I did few researches.
John Smith
Leading Light 1975
This short video is a fun recording of the light movements by the daytime, night time and indoor light. It records by the light changing and the shadows changing as well. I do like the way how he named it. Leading Light? Can people actually lead the light, especially the sunlight or moon light? Of course, we can not. However, somehow the artist did it by editing the video. It makes me thinking, if we can lead the light, could we lead the time then? Thus, this artist inspired me that I can play shadows through the photogram image, but how?
Marina Abramocic
Freeing the Memory
Another great perform art's early work inspiring me as well. Marina's early perform works can be quite aggressive, compare with her other works this one is peaceful but powerful. The process, she was speaking out all the words which I assume they are from her memories. The whole perform she had non facial active or emotions. For my understanding, that she didn't seeing herself as a person anymore, she is actually a vessel which is holding and spreading all the memories. Without the interrupt of her face, all the words become to more powerful, the audience could more focus on the words. That inspired me I could use some words relevant time, but what words and how to represent them?
Then we had a chance to explore the poetry about time, there is a poetry called The Love Song by J. Alfred Prufock is attracting me once I read it. It's not only about love, but also about life changing, time flying by, all the small details and fictions in our life, such as coffee spoon, toast, tea and marmalade. There is a sentence inspired me immediately ' a magic lantern threw the nerves in patterns on a screen'. I feel that's a bingo! The image of the wool is exactly the nerves of time as patterns, I could use the light to project the shadows on the wall to make this sentence into a actual scene. Also use the words from the poetry.
Print the images on the actinic paper so the light can through when I put them on the projector. The images show very well, I like the third image the best because the black and red colour of the words been printed out have contrast, also the pattern of the wool as a back ground make the image linked the poetry. Then I try to make a video.
The video above shows how the two images works together on the projector and the image is showing on the wall. One side I completed the plan which is make the sentence from the poetry coming to a physical scene, other side, I don't feel it's right. The editing is not smooth enough when the screen changes, the speed is too fast and my hands in the video are interrupting. So I need to keep trying.
Trying to add different pictures to add in, working with the words and the pattern. Me and my son are all my life and all my time spending on, our pictures are linking the topic. However, I just feel it's too much, too many layers, the images between each other couldn't talk any more, the emotions could not delivery. What I can do now?
As you can see, this is the final video. I take off everything out and only left my eye and the words. Leave them in the water and spinning. I know it's nothing like what I have planed before, however, I know this is it. The red and black words shows clearly in the water, with spinning, you kind of can read but can't read it, it likes the time, you want to reach it but you never could. My eye inside gives this video a creepy and loneliness feeling, it likes Marina's perform, no facile movement, the empty, soulless eyes. Also, I speed down the video so the audience still can see the words even it's spinning. I would like to play the video in a dark room or a larger walls.
