Apart of the school trips and exhibitions, I like to go places by my own to find more inspirations. Thus, one of the weekends while my child not with me, I popped to Tate Liverpool. This trip inspired me also helped me to move my project forward.
Compare to Tate Morden, Tate Liverpool is much smaller, however, I feel it's more welcoming. Less tourists, and the whole building it's easy to reach, because it's small, so the audiences could take their time to read the information well on the wall.
The place exhibits a variety of art works, by materials, cultures and time. You can see classic oil painting, modern print works, glass installations, video performance art works, sculptures...
Also, you could see artist from different races and take the responses of their culture, and by the end all shows into their art works.
Created by Glenn Ligon B 1960
The work refers to signs carried by striking Black sanitation workers in Memphis in 1968. This work reflect the Civil Rights Movement in US at 1950s to 1960s. Seeing this piece of print and read the story behind it, I feel I AM A MAN as a sign it still works today. After more half century, people still do protests to fight for their human rights. Does human really improving by some of the things? Such as to know as man from different races, colours, we are all equal. I think we still have long way to go, that's exactly how this piece of art could last this long. It delights me to understand the purpose of art. Art could be a reflect of history and the warning to present days!
Back to professional practice, the places such as Tate Liverpool, Tate Modern, Nottingham contemporary which exhibit art works but not for sale, what's the point to visit them as an artist? It would help us to be famous or help us sale our works.
For my opinion is, yes we do want to be famous and sale our works, however, there are more important reasons about art. Arts get its purpose, the art works been exhibited in them non sale places are helping people to know art well. they use art to educated people, those places are no difference with museums. If people who do art only wants making money, then I think there won't be real art works anymore, only will be products!
