Luckily this week our class went down to contemporary to visit three interesting different artists' solo show. Just write some notes and thoughts here also show some images.
When I visit an exhibition I like to have a blind tour and read or research the artist afterwards. Because I feel the words on the wall to describe and introduce the artist is kind of interrupting me to really get my mind into the art works. So let us talk about how I feel while I wandering around the exhibition.
Charlotte Johannesson
As I walked into the room of Charlotte I actually could define she is a textile artist straight away. The art works are modern and stand out, especially the screens and moving digital images. It's a piece that welcome audiences to take a part and be a part in it( seeing the image of myself at the top of this article). To be honest, I am not a big fan of the text on her weaving pieces, however, I think the idea about weaving patterns as a digital way is pretty cool.
There're another small group of print and mix medium art works which attracts me a lot. When I look closer, I can see the artist actually made her own paper which has textures on it, and combine the ink marks, different materials and layers, they just look so interesting, the uneven edges of the paper also added the personality to the works. This kind of gives me an thought that should I make my own paper to print or collaging and how?
Rosalind Nashashibi
Hooks
The second room I went is a painting solo show of Rosalind Nashashibi. Still I don't know who she is and what she created before, I just know the show called Hook. I don't think that I like this artist's painting after a looking around. All the paintings give a feeling which someone peeking me or I am peeking someone from the gap of the blinds or a door, also they all been hooked, for my understanding is they are all been locked. As you can see the painting above, I don't know what's that person peeking at behind the blind or try to peek something in the blind, I just feel creepy and unbreathable. In another way, I have to say the artist's works are quite dramatic and vivid.
Carolyn Lazard
Long Talk
By the end I just lead myself into this room which has no lights. It was a bit scary at the beginning. Then I could see some really weak lights on the floor, so while I walk closer I saw three tv and big chair, so I sit down. There are words moving on the screen which reminds me Matins Abramovic. The surrounding sounds, like breathing and talking is kind of give me a pressure, especially when you can not see. There is a piece of mat further down under a blurry ceiling light. I could see a lot of scratch marks on it when I look closer. There is a thought full of my brain while I was in this room. I wanted to crawling to the mat under the light and do a weird dance, imagine there was only me on the earth.
All above are the thoughts that during I visited the exhibitions without knowing any of them. Did some research afterwards, then interesting things happened.
Charlotte is a artist which created textile art works between the artisanal and the digital, however, she started in 1970s, that was shocking me, because her works are so modern even we look them right now.
Rosalind is actually not only an artist who paints paintings, but also a filmmaker. That makes sense why the paintings are so dramatic.
Carolyn Lazard's exhibition in the dark room, I found out the mat under the light is a real actual dance mat from a dance studio.
I do feel visit an exhibition without research first, it's a way to improve our sensitive of art, also could feel the art works more by out pure art sense.
