Time flies, now it's the end for the second project. There are improvements, new skills experiments and of course mistakes as well.
At the beginning of this project we had our trip to Ilkeston. Once we came back I got three ideas which inspired from different angles of Ilkeston, either had a big meaning- war art, or something more - the structure of the items from the museum. I have been positively responded my ideas and made plans. By sketching and making physical things. However, I recognised that I have a strong connection with the kitchen. I feel kitchen can be everyone's museum that stores your life experiences and love. So I narrowed down my project should be create works around kitchen.
During the trip at Ilkeston, I had a disappointed feeling about that place. It's not very alive like Nottingham. The town centre was empty and quite. It's not a diversity town either. That's also a point which pulled my mind.
Then we had a talk about our ideas, one of our tutor's question was light my mind up. He said" what you can bring back to Ilkeston?" That's a delightful question. So I don't like the town, what I could bring back to it and maybe improve it? My answer is diversity indeed.
Then my ideas came out immediately, something could represent diversity and come from my kitchen, that must be dumplings!
Then as you can see, during the whole project I created our my works around dumplings. Process of making dumpling, took videos of making dumplings, dumplings sharing in the college building, making ceramic dumpling sculptures by different structures, created dumpling images by 2D and 3D.
Compare to last project I haven't got a lot of artist research for this project. However, I see that as an improvement. The couple of artists I research gave my ideas about how I would deliver my ideas, support and inspired me for the whole project. And seeing my works I could feel my own reaction and creative. Not like last project, I did a mount of research but my works didn't related on them that much. Therefore, I see it's a improvement.
I also keep finding and trying different skills and materials. Especially about glass powder print. However, because my less awareness about the specialness of the material which is glass easy to brake. I did damaged that piece of work, that's a shame. Well, at least I learned from it, and next time I will be much more careful.
Over all I have to say, I made myself an interesting project to carry on my creative art making and I did enjoy it. Let us looking forward for the exhibition, see if I really could bring a bit diversity back to Ilkeston!
