Cindy Sherman Untitled Film Stills 1977- 80
"I wish I could treat every day as Halloween, and get dressed up and go out into the world as some eccentric character." Cindy Sherman
"For four decades, Cindy Sherman has probed the construction of identity, playing with the visual and cultural codes of art, celebrity, gender, and photography. She is among the most significant artists of the Pictures Generation—a group that also includes Richard Prince, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, and Robert Longo—who came of age in the 1970s and responded to the mass media landscape surrounding them with both humour and criticism, appropriating images from advertising, film, television, and magazines for their art."
Compare to Cindy's other works, such as she dressed up as the characters from classic paintings or as the scary clowns from horror movies, I love her early works which is Untitled film still more. Each of her in the untitled film still is still has a her inside, at least that's how I feel about it. She can be a boring house wife, a fashion lady on the road, or a sad lady just broke up with her ex. Another way to say, she is a great story teller by her photography. There is no words, no sound to explain the images, however, it makes the audiences to think, to guess what happened before and after. That's the idea which is inspiring me.
Who I want to be? Who I want to act?
Acting as Me and Myself
The answer is I don't to be any body else except me!
As you can see, I shot another couple of photography of myself in my own house, my own kitchen. What I am doing, opening the fridge, grab a drink, why? When this happens? Morning? Midnight? What I did before and what I will do after?
The cattle, the pictures on the fridge, the chopping board, all the items in the scene, what are they telling? Is there a story or several?
Pick six of the photography and edit them together, suddenly everything makes sense to me.
They are all me, different sections of me in the scene, this is a non stop scene, because this is my life scene. Here is the story I am telling about, humanity, self- identity, female power, self appreciation. And we all should accept who we are as who we are, we don't need to act as anyone.
Photography are happily done, then back to the same issue, how to projecting them?
