Continuing the ceramic exploration process for the piece that I made by my body casting mold. I decided to transfer the letter my son wrote to me for Mather's day by the traditional Chinese blue. However, the issue for the process is how I could transfer it?
While I read thee technic books in the ceramic studio that I found a skill called pounding, ceramic artists use this skill to transfer detail images onto the pottery, thus I want to try it.
As you can see, I tracing the letters on a tracing paper, then pin so many little holes on it, so the charcoal could go through, then the image will transfer onto the surface of my ceramic piece. Somehow, it doesn't work, it doesn't work at all! Why? Maybe the fabric is wrong, maybe the holes are too small, maybe the charcoal powder is not smooth enough. Nothing I can do, just keep trying.
Then I thought maybe the glazing liquid could through the small holes, so I used a small piece of sponge press the blue glazing on the tracing paper see if the letters would transfer. Again, it doesn't work, showing on the picture above, the image only half been transferred, that's not good enough, not close to the success at all! Is that it?
Then something saved my life- carbon paper! Laying the letter and carbon paper on the ceramic then tracing it straight away. Everything been transferred clearly on the surface!
Use a fine brush to trace the letters by the blue glazing. One thing is not sure which is none of us knowing if the marks from the carbon paper will stay or disappear after fire!? I guess we have to wait and see, if it success that will be great, it means I could transfer any detailed images onto the ceramic surface!
